Five-Year AFC Component Supply to a Major European Longwall Equipment Manufacturer
Client identity and proprietary component details are withheld under the terms of the supply agreement. This case describes the supply scope, manufacturing process, and documentation standards applied. It is published to illustrate our capability and supply process for European procurement teams evaluating qualified sources for AFC and longwall conveyor components.
Background
The client is a well-established European manufacturer of longwall mining equipment, supplying armored face conveyor systems, stage loaders, and associated components to underground coal mining operations primarily in Europe. Their procurement process for components produced in China requires suppliers to meet specific dimensional tolerance standards, material certification requirements, and documentation formats compatible with their incoming quality inspection procedures.
The supply relationship began with a qualification process covering manufacturing capability assessment, sample production and inspection, and documentation review. Volume supply commenced following sample approval and has continued without interruption for over five years across multiple component types and delivery batches.
Supply Scope
The supply scope covers structural and wear components for AFC face conveyor and stage loader systems, produced to the client’s proprietary drawings under NDA. Component types within the scope include:
- Pan sides (/ Seitenwangen) — cast and fabricated versions to drawing, with dimensional verification at chain rail profile and height, pan-to-pan connection interfaces, and overall length. Rail tolerance is held to the client’s specified range on every batch.
- Connecting housings — cast structural components for pan-to-pan articulation joints. Articulation geometry and bore positions verified dimensionally. Cast in structural alloy steel to the client’s material specification.
- Scraper blades (flights) — wear-resistant alloy steel, profiled to cross-section drawing. Width tolerance verified against the client’s acceptance range.
- Structural weld assemblies — heavy fabricated components for drive and return end structures, produced to welding procedure specifications and inspected to the client’s weld quality standard.
Manufacturing and Quality Process
All components are produced through our standard process control sequence: incoming material verification against the client’s specified chemistry and mechanical property requirements, casting or fabrication to drawing, heat treatment where specified, CNC machining of critical interfaces, dimensional inspection at the features specified in the client’s inspection plan, and documentation compilation before shipment.
The client’s inspection requirements include:
- Material certificates per heat, confirming chemistry to the specified grade
- Dimensional inspection records covering all features listed in the client’s control plan
- Hardness verification after heat treatment where applicable
- Weld inspection records for fabricated assemblies
Documentation is submitted in the format specified by the client’s quality management system. Deviations from specification — when they occur — are reported immediately with proposed disposition; no non-conforming material has been shipped without prior client notification and written acceptance.
Supply Continuity and Communication
Over five years of supply, the relationship has covered multiple product generations and drawing revisions. Drawing updates are managed through a controlled revision process: new revision received, engineering review completed, any dimensional or material changes flagged for client confirmation before the updated drawing is released to production.
Delivery schedules are coordinated with the client’s production planning. Pre-shipment notification is provided with sufficient lead time for the client to arrange incoming inspection. Production status is available to the client on request with a response time of 1–2 hours during business hours.
Relevance for European Procurement Teams
European longwall equipment manufacturers and their tier-1 suppliers evaluating Chinese sources for AFC components typically have specific concerns: dimensional consistency across batches, material certification to European or equivalent standards, documentation compatible with their QMS, and a supplier who communicates proactively rather than reactively.
This supply relationship demonstrates that these requirements can be met consistently over an extended period. We are able to discuss our capability, quality process, and documentation standards in detail with qualified enquirers. NDA execution prior to any technical discussion involving drawings or specifications is standard on our side.
