Engineering Case – Custom High-Chromium Wear Rings for a European Industrial Client
A long-standing European industrial client required 108 high-chromium wear rings — comprising three complete working sets — for a high-intensity mill system. Mine Components was engaged to manufacture the rings to proprietary drawings under strict technical and documentation requirements.
Note: Due to confidentiality requirements, the client’s identity and specific part numbers are omitted.
The Technical Requirements
- Material: GX260Cr27 high-chromium cast iron, hardness ≥500 HB (actual: 520–560 HB)
- Dimensional accuracy: 100% inspection on critical features
- Documentation: Chemical analysis, hardness reports, dimensional inspection records, and heat treatment curves
Following technical discussions, the final material selected was GX260Cr27 high-chromium iron, approved by the client as equivalent to the original specification to ensure optimal wear resistance and equipment compatibility.
Our Manufacturing & Quality Approach
1. Material & Process Control
All 108 rings were cast in GX260Cr27 high-chromium iron. Each heat was analyzed before pouring to confirm chemistry within controlled parameters (C: 2.3–2.9%, Cr: 26–28%).
2. Heat Treatment & Hardness Verification
All rings were quenched and tempered to achieve uniform hardness ≥500 HB (actual measured range: 520–560 HB). 100% hardness testing was conducted and documented.
3. Precision Dimensional Inspection
Critical diameters, angles, and radii were inspected using calibrated instruments. Each of the 108 rings underwent full inspection and met tolerance requirements.
4. Non-Destructive Testing
100% Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) ensured freedom from surface cracks across the entire batch.
5. Full-Set Assembly Validation
All rings were trial-assembled into complete working sets to verify fit accuracy and inter-part clearances prior to shipment. Assembly validation at this scale — across three full sets — confirms dimensional consistency not just within a single ring, but across the entire production batch. Each set forms a closed geometric assembly; any dimensional deviation accumulates around the circumference and becomes immediately visible during trial fit. No remedial work was required.

6. Complete Documentation Package
- Chemical composition report per heat
- Individual hardness test reports
- 100% dimensional inspection records, with assembly fit verification across all sets
- Heat treatment curve charts
- MPI inspection reports
- Packing list and shipment photos
The Result
Successful assembly validation confirmed dimensional consistency across the full production batch. The complete documentation package — chemical analysis, individual hardness reports, 100% dimensional inspection records, heat treatment curve charts, and MPI reports — met the client’s quality system requirements without amendment. Delivery was made on schedule and was followed by repeat orders for the same component.
Why This Project Matters
- Demonstrates full traceability and documentation capability across a multi-set, multi-heat production batch
- Validates expertise in high-chromium wear-resistant castings
- Shows dimensional precision through full-set assembly verification
- Confirms long-term industrial partnerships built on consistent execution
